In classical Hatha and Kundalini Yoga, practicing asana and pranayama without energetic containment is compared to storing precious water in an unbaked clay pot—prana naturally dissipates outward through physiological escapes. To lock, concentrate, and redirect this subtle energy upward through the central spinal channel (Sushumna Nadi), the rishis engineered the three sovereign energy locks known as Bandhas: Mula Bandha (The Root Lock), Uddiyana Bandha (The Abdominal Flying Lock), and Jalandhara Bandha (The Throat / Chin Lock). When all three locks are engaged simultaneously during breath retention (Kumbhaka), they form Maha Bandha (The Great Lock), reversing cellular aging and awakening spiritual consciousness. The Kriyasya Bandha Studio provides anatomical and energetic instructions.
The Three Fundamental Bandhas
- Mula Bandha (Root Lock): Contraction of the perineum (pelvic floor muscles). Prevents downward dissipation of Apana Vayu, directing life force upward to unite with Prana Vayu at the solar plexus.
- Uddiyana Bandha (Abdominal Lock): Following complete exhalation, the abdominal wall is drawn upward and backward against the spine. Massages internal visceral organs, cures constipation, tones the vagus nerve, and stimulates Jatharagni.
- Jalandhara Bandha (Throat Lock): The chin is pressed firmly into the jugular notch of the sternum while holding the breath. Compresses the carotid sinus, lowers heart rate, regulates thyroid metabolism, and seals the nectar (Amrita) from falling into the gastric fire.
- Maha Bandha (The Supreme Lock): Simultaneous activation of Mula, Uddiyana, and Jalandhara Bandhas during internal or external retention.
