Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a severe, multi-system mood disorder characterized by persistent low mood (depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day) and/or marked anhedonia (pervasive loss of interest or pleasure in all or almost all activities) lasting at least two consecutive weeks, accompanied by neurovegetative symptoms (sleep disturbance, appetite/weight shifts, psychomotor agitation or retardation, severe fatigue), feelings of excessive guilt/worthlessness, executive dysfunction, and recurrent suicidal ideation. Grounded in Aaron T. Beck’s Cognitive Model of Depression (1967) and Peter Lewinsohn’s Behavioral Activation Theory, depression is maintained by a vicious cycle of cognitive schemas and behavioral withdrawal. The Depression Psychoeducation Module provides 23 structured video lessons detailing mood neurobiology, cognitive restructuring, and behavioral activation scheduling.

Beck’s Cognitive Triad & Depressive Schemas

Aaron Beck demonstrated that depressed individuals operate through rigid, negative core schemas that distort incoming information via the Negative Cognitive Triad:

  • Negative View of the Self: “I am worthless, broken, a burden to everyone.”
  • Negative View of the World / Current Experience: “Everything is painful, demanding, and unfair.”
  • Negative View of the Future: “Nothing will ever improve; my suffering is permanent.”

These schemas trigger systematic cognitive errors: all-or-nothing thinking, overgeneralization, mental filtering, and emotional reasoning.

Behavioral Activation (BA): Breaking the Depressive Inertia

Depression prompts behavioural withdrawal (staying in bed, cancelling social plans, neglecting hygiene), which dramatically starves the brain of response-contingent positive reinforcement. This withdrawal deepens fatigue and guilt, perpetuating lower mood. Behavioral Activation (BA) systematically reverses this spiral: scheduling mastery and pleasure activities using the TRAP and TRAC models (moving from Trigger → Response → Avoidance Pattern into Trigger → Response → Alternative Coping), re-engaging dopamine circuits before internal motivation returns.
