Environmental and Climate Psychology examines the profound reciprocal interactions between human mental health, built and natural ecologies, and the planetary climate crisis. Beyond recognizing the restorative benefits of nature exposure (Stephen Kaplan’s Attention Restoration Theory – ART and Roger Ulrich’s Stress Recovery Theory), contemporary ecopsychology investigates the emergence of acute existential ecological distress: Eco-Anxiety (chronic fear of environmental doom and ecosystem collapse) and Glenn Albrecht’s concept of Solastalgia—the existential homesickness and melancholia experienced when one’s home environment is damaged or transformed by ecological degradation while one is still living in it. The Environmental and Climate Psychology for Wellbeing Psychoeducation Module delivers 10 structured video lessons on biophilia, climate grief, eco-resilience, and transforming ecological dread into collective climate action.

Solastalgia vs. Traditional Nostalgia

  • Nostalgia: Melancholy produced by being physically separated from one’s beloved home place.
  • Solastalgia (Glenn Albrecht): The distressing pain of witnessing one’s beloved lived environment being stripped, poisoned, or destroyed by deforestation, mining, drought, or extreme weather events while remaining in place.

Stephen Kaplan’s Attention Restoration Theory (ART)

Urban built environments demand continuous Directed Attention (filtering out sirens, traffic, screens), which depletes prefrontal executive energy, producing irritability and mental fatigue. Natural wilderness environments engage “Soft Fascination” (the gentle rustle of leaves, moving water, dappled sunlight), which allows directed attention networks to rest, physically replenishing prefrontal capacity and reducing amygdala reactivity.
