The source texts and principles of Hatha Yoga

The Meaning of Hatha
'Ha' represents the solar, active, heating energy; 'Tha' the lunar, calm, cooling energy. Hatha Yoga seeks to balance these forces within us, creating harmony between effort and ease, activity and rest.
Hatha Yoga Pradipika
A classical 15th-century text by Swami Svatmarama. It describes asanas, pranayama, mudras, bandhas, and the awakening of subtle energy, presenting Hatha as a path toward Raja Yoga.
Gheranda Samhita
A 17th-century text presenting a seven-fold path (Saptanga Yoga) including purification, posture, mudra, sense-withdrawal, breath, meditation, and absorption.
Shiva Samhita
A classical Hatha text blending philosophy, devotion, and practice, emphasizing the subtle body, energy channels (nadis), and centers (chakras).
Practices of Hatha Yoga
Hatha includes Shatkarma (cleansing), Asana (postures), Pranayama (breath), Mudra (gestures), Bandha (locks), and Nada (inner sound). Each prepares body and mind for deeper meditation.
Hatha vs Modern Posture Yoga
Traditional Hatha Yoga is a complete spiritual discipline, while modern 'yoga classes' often focus mainly on physical postures for fitness. Both have value, but understanding the deeper roots enriches your practice.
Kundalini — A Note of Caution
Hatha texts describe awakening Kundalini energy. These are advanced practices that should only be approached gradually, under an experienced teacher, never forced.
